Holidays / Weather & Climate Information

Chuseok

Chuseok is a national holiday in Korea. It is the harvest festival where families gather together and eat good food. Most stores are closed on this day, including the ones on campus, so it’s a good idea to stock up on food beforehand. The Burger King will be open, as well as a few stores off-campus. This year, Chuseok is on the 14th of September. The day before Chuseok and the day after are also holidays.

SeolNal

Seol is the Korean New Year. As with Chuseok, the day before and after Seol are holidays too. This holiday is at the start of the lunar year.

Other holidays include Children’s Day, Buddha’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Independance Day, Hangeul Day, and Christmas.

Weather & Climate Information

Korea has four seasons, with a wet monsoon/summer in the middle of the year, and a cold winter from November to March. It can get pretty hot in the summer, with temperatures rising to 36°C during the day sometimes. During autumn, there's generally a big temperature difference between day and nighttime. Winter can be very cold or mild, depending on where you’re coming from; temperatures can go as low as -13°C. Temperature differences won’t be a problem indoors (dormitories are furnished with ample heating and air conditioning), but you may want to be prepared for hot summers and cold winters. In September, the weather is generally hot in the day and cool at night.
