Borrowing and Returning Services (Ext. 2232)

A. Borrowing/Returning

Users who would like to borrow materials can use KAIST Library's homepage to check the availability and location to determine the status of the materials.
If the material is available, after determining the location of the material, users can look it up directly and borrow it with showing their ID Card at the circulation desk on the 1st floor. If there are unpaid fines, the material isn't allowed to check out until the fines are paid.
Borrowed materials must be returned on or before their due date. Therefore, it is essential to be aware of KAIST Library's policy.

B . Renewal and reservation services

To renew a material, users can do it themselves through KAIST Library's homepage - "My Library". However, if the borrowed material is overdue or reserved from others, then users aren't allowed to renew it. To reserve a material, as soon as a material is returned, the user will be informed of the details through e-mail and the material will be held in the reserved section at the circulation desk for one week.

 

C. Due date and notice of overdue materials

Users will be given three day's notice via e-mail and if a borrowed material is overdue, users will be given an overdue notice on the due date and on every Monday after the due date. In order to receive such reminders, users have to register their e-mail addresses on My library -> My information of KAIST Library's homepage

 

D. Overdue fines and payment

If users fail to return materials on or before their due date, for everyday overdue users will be charged 100 won per material. Unpaid fines will also result in the suspension of borrowing privileges and being disadvantages for graduation. In case borrowed material is damaged or lost, the user has to report it to circulation desk immediately and replace the materials. If it is not possible to find an exact replacement, then the user has to compensate for it following the rule of KAIST Library.

 

E. InterLibrary Loan Service

    If a material is not available in KAIST Library including any other branch libraries, users will be able to borrow the material from the cooperative library. Users can register with the association through the web site at http://www.ksla.info/ and apply for a material directly. The loan period of InterLibrary Loan is within 15 days and users can extend the period once for another 7 days.
    For materials found in other libraries that are not part of the association, users can still obtain restricted access by requesting it to the circulation desk.

 

 

Document Delivery Service(Ext: 2227)

For users who would like to use materials(articles, theses, part of monographs) not held in KAIST library, a service providing access to the original copy from affiliated domestic and international organization is available. Users can visit KAIST Library's homepage or NDSL homepage and request a copy of the original material. Materials that are not found in Korea can be accessed through England’s BLDSC(British Library Document Supply Centre).

 

 

Reference Information Service(Ext: 2223)

Service providing assistance for individual library users refers to all the services provided by librarians to users who are looking for information. KAIST Library offers reference services to users

are basic services. There are also electronic information such as web databases and internet allowing users to access information and services even without visiting KAIST library Materials held in the Reference Room include specific fields related reference materials such as dictionaries, professional dictionaries, encyclopedia, language dictionaries, name indexes , yearbooks, atlas, various statistical reports, calendars of overseas institutions, indexes , abstracts, bibliographies. A red label is used for these materials and the symbol, “R” (reference book), is also used for means of differentiating from normal materials. Users are only allowed to use these materials in KAIST library.

 

 

Remote Access (Ext: 4493)

Generally, e-Resources such as e-Journal, e-Book, Web DB are avaliable on campus. e-Resource remote access service enables KAIST members to access all e-Resources even off campus. (It is required to log in, see here for more details)

 

 

Request to Purchase Books (Ext: 2222, 2225)

Refers to the service by which registered staff and students can purchase, donate and exchange materials required for academic review, research activities and others (theses, research reports, supplementary materials electronic materials) and the purpose of this service is to provide the required material in quick and effective manner.

 

Purchase using library budget

Users can visit KAIST library's homepage - Library Services - click the "Book Requests" and fill in the request form. users can request for a new purchase and check out the request status at the same time on KAIST Library's homepage. Users who would like to purchase a new book have to choose "Direct Request" on the webpage and enter the information for about the book(title, author, publisher, ISBN, publication year, and price) and submit the request. Or users can also choose "By Online Bookstore Search"

When researchers are going to purchase large quantities of materials by research budgets, they can ask the library to provide book purchasing services. Books registered in KAIST library(purchased by research budgets) can be checked out for five years for research. Users can request this service on KAIST Library's homepage.

 

 

Data Arrangement System (Ext: 2225)

Refers to the library system for the systematic arrangement of data to allow for the better utilization of library data so that users can approach them easily. KAIST Library is using LC(Library of Congress) Classification System and by marking related theme or structure with a suitable library code, the position of the material is determined.

Undergraduate Branch Library (Ext: 4171)

A. Reading rooms and Group study rooms

There are seats available in the self-study area and it is open 24 hours a day. Group study rooms are divided into 8 small rooms(4 seats) and 4 large rooms(15 seats). Users can reserve a study room or group study room through KAIST Library's homepage - [webcais system]

 

B. Media Cafe, Newspapers & Magazines

For the convenience of undergraduates, various magazines and DVDs are avaliable in Media Cafe and newspapers in the lobby on the 1st floor of the Undergraduate Branch Library.
