Prof. Chung Named Winner of 2008 KAIST Scientific Award
Professor Chung Jong-Kyeong of the Department of Biological Sciences was named the winner of the 2008 KAIST Scientific Award. The prize was awarded by KAIST President Suh Nam-Pyo during the 37th KAIST anniversary ceremony on Feb. 16. Chung was cited for disclosing the new anti-cancer aspect of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK). His papers, published in the science magazine Nature in 2006 and again in 2007, revealed that the protein could be used to treat certain forms of cancer, as well as prevent malignant growths.

KAIST Retains Top Spot in Systems and Software Engineering
For two consecutive years, KAIST, Korea"s top science and technology university, topped the list of the world"s most published institutions in the field of systems and software engineering, according to a survey conducted by the Journal of Systems and Software. The survey assessed systems and software engineering scholars and institutions by the number of papers they published in six major journals of the field from 2001 to 2005. Geographically, seven of the top 15 institutions are from the Asia-Pacific region, six from the United States and two from Europe. In previous assessments, institutions from the Americas took the lion"s share. KAIST topped the list of 15 in 2006 and again in 2007. The runner-up for 2007 is China"s National Chiao Tung University. Norway"s Simula Research Laboratory and Korea"s Seoul National University were ranked third and fourth, respectively. Rounding up the top ten list are Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Iowa State University, and University of Texas at Dallas, all from the United States; and City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Two KAIST professors, Chung Chin-Wan and Kim Myoung-Ho, were among the top ten most published scholars. Chung"s papers were mostly about his researches in database, web, and multimedia, while Kim"s researches concerned database systems and distributed information processing. The Journal of Systems and Software, a computer science journal specializing in the software systems, is published by Elsevier, the Dutch-based world"s largest publisher of medical and scientific literature.

Pop Singer Kim Makes Second Donation to KAIST
Popular singer Kim Jang-Hoon donated 50 million won to KAIST for the development of Korea"s prestigious S&T university on Thursday, Feb. 14. It was the singer"s second gift to KAIST in a year. Kim donated the same amount of money in March 2007 to express his gratitude to Professor Oh Jun-Ho and his research team for allowing him to use HUBO, South Korea"s first humanoid robot, for his concerts in 2006. In a brief donation ceremony at the KAIST president"s office, Kim said he hoped he would be of any help in the development of science in Korea.

KAIST, Hynix Agree to Cooperate in Fostering Skilled Manpower
KAIST and Hynix Semiconductor, the world’s second largest producer of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, have agreed to promote bilateral cooperation in fostering highly skilled manpower for the semiconductor industry. A signing ceremony was held on Jan. 21 in Seoul. The agreement marked an expansion of the scope of cooperation between the two organizations into the system IC industry. Since 1995, KAIST and Hynix have cooperated in fostering human resource specialized in the memory semiconductor area, bringing up a total of 250 highly skilled personnel in the area so far. Under the new agreement, Hynix will provide financial support, including scholarships, to KAIST for the next five years. The number of students subject to the Hynix-financed program will be increased to 20 a year from the current 10. New material engineering and physics will be added to the areas covered by the cooperation program.

KAIST, Nokia Launch Joint Research Project
Prof. Kyung Wook Baik of KAIST and his research team in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering announced the launch of a joint research project with Nokia, the world"s leading mobile phone supplier, on Jan. 24. It is the first time that Nokia runs a joint research project with a Korean university or research institute. Under the agreement, KAIST will develop a new ultrasonic welding process to bond various modules for mobile phones. The ultrasonic welding process, an indigenous technology patented by the research team led by Prof. Baik, is expected to contribute greatly to improving productivity in manufacturing mobile phones, as well as making it smaller and lighter. The research period is six month and the project fund amounts to 35,000 euros.

Prof. Hwang Inaugurated as 22nd President of KISS
Prof. Hwang Inaugurated as 22nd President of KISS Kyu-Young Hwang, a professor of Computer Sciences, has been inaugurated as the 22nd president of the Korea Information Science Society (KISS). The KISS, established in 1973, is Korea’s largest computer science-related society holding about 4,000 members. Prof. Hwang is now managing programs to issue the society’s publications and for information exchanges and putting huge efforts on promoting global cooperation and strengthening the partnership with overseas institutions to raise the society’s global standings. He is also making great efforts to enhance the capabilities and competitiveness of future human resources through a program to improve education systems concerning computer/ programming.

KAIST to build large-scale civil engineering experiment center
- Geo-Centrifuge experiment center of an area of about 1,712 square meters and an estimated construction cost of total 8.4 billion won - Simulation laboratory in the field of geotechnical engineering with state-of-the-art experiment equipment- Ground-breaking ceremony held on April 3 at 4 pm KAIST will construct ‘distributed shared-type Geo-Centrifuge experiment center’, a large-scale civil engineering laboratory that will study natural disasters such as earthquake, embankment collapse, etc. with ground structure miniatures. A two-story building with a basement occupying an area of about 1,712 square meters will become a landmark laboratory in the field of geotechnical engineering that can be used for the education, research, and social infrastructure design by universities, institutes, and corporations via high-speed information and communication network. The estimated construction cost is 8.4 billion won. The center will be composed of experiment building including geo-centrifuge laboratory, model-making room, workshop, geotechnical engineering laboratory, and specimen storehouse; and research building including control room, video conference room, electronic library, and research rooms. A variety of convenience facilities for researchers and video conference and remote monitoring system, with which researcher at remote distances can directly participate in experiments, will be provided in the research building, and world’s top-class experiment equipment such as geo-centrifuge with a turning radius of 5 meters, a maximum acceleration of 130 G (130 times faster than the acceleration of gravity), a preload of 2,400 kg and bidirectional shaking-table that can reproduce earthquakes-like wave during experiments, and robots that can reproduce construction procedures by a remote control will be installed. Geo-Centrifuge experiment refers to an experiment that reproduces natural disaster-like motions by making miniatures of large-scale ground structures such as dams, slopes, etc. and using centrifugal forces generated from high-speed rotation. This experiment can easily and rapidly reproduce actual motions of ground structures at a low cost, thereby being widely used for various geotechnical engineering researches such as evaluation of seismic safety, movement of soft ground, slope stability analysis, etc. The causes of the embankment collapse in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 were also revealed by simulation tests by this experiment. “The center will make possible a variety of experiments and researches that have never been available in Korea due to the lack of experiment infrastructure, therefore activate researches over the design and construction of large-scale social infrastructures. Making possible civil engineering researches demanding the use of large-scale equipment like Centrifuge, severely dependent on overseas technologies so far, will enhance the global competitiveness of Korean construction industry,” said Dong-soo Kim, President of the center. The center will be constructed as part of the Ministry of Construction & Transportation (MOCT)’s project for the establishment of distributed shared-style construction research infrastructure, which is designed to establish construction research infrastructures in a national level. The ground breaking ceremony was held at KAIST on April 3 at 4 pm.

Singer Janghoon Kim Donates Development Fund to KAIST - Generously donates part of earnings from his concert where HUBO performed for development of science - Opportunity for activation of science culture through encounter between science and culture Singer Janghoon Kim donated 50 million won from his concert earnings for KAIST development fund. Singer Kim visited KAIST on January 16 (Tue) and donated the development fund at the joint lecture room in KAIST Mechanical Engineering B/D. Singer Kim had a concert at the end of the last year where he performed with ‘HUBO’ and ‘Albert HUBO’, human-like robots of KAIST HUBO center. Singer Kim made a donation to express his gratitude to KAIST Professor Joonho Oh and his research team, who assisted his concert actively to allow HUBO to join the concert in spite of technical difficulties and research obstacles. “Although HUBO has performed various activities so far, it is the first time to make a successful performance with a singer on a stage. Honestly, I hesitated a lot to allow HUBO to join Kim’s concert due to safety problems etc., but I was so impressed by Kim’s interest and passion for science, and thus decided HUBO’s joining the concert. This is the first case how robots can exchange with public cultures. I wish this case will be a momentum to activate science culture and make people feel closer to science,” Professor Oh said. The donation will be spent partly as KAIST development fund (20 million won) and partly on the publicity of science and technology via HUBO (30 million won).

Yoonsun Doh Wins ‘Outstanding Poster Paper Award’ at IDW Yoonsun Doh, a master-course student at the Division of Electrical Engineering (Advisory professor Kyungchul Choi) won the Outstanding Poster Paper Award at IDW 2006, which was held at Otsu, Japan on December 8, 2006. The title of Doh’s paper is ‘Relationship between IR Emission of Reset Discharge and Image Retention in AC PDP’. At the paper, Doh proposed a method capable of quantitatively measuring the temporary image-sticking phenomena, which is raised as a problem that impairs the quality of images on an AC PDP.

CJIS donates development fund of two hundreds million won to KAIST
CJIS donates development fund of two hundreds million won to KAIST CJ Investment & Securities Co., Ltd. (CJIS/ CEO Hong-Chang Kim) donated a development fund of two hundreds million won to KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) on Monday, August 30 to contribute to the development of KAIST and its fostering of science genius. At the donation ceremony held at the main conference room in KAIST main administration building, CJIS CEO Hong-Chang Kim said, “I am very pleased to contribute to the development of KAIST, which is developing into a world-class research university.” In response to this, KAIST president Nam-Pyo Suh said, “I am very grateful for CJIS’s support. I will do my best to make KAIST one of the world-class research universities to be the hub of the world as well as Korea in the field of the cutting-edge science and technology.”

Ju-pyeong Lee won the Best Paper Award from IEEE RTAS
Ju-pyeong Lee, doctoral student of the Dept. of Electrical Engineering of KAIST, received the Best Paper Award from the 11th Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Real-Time and Embedded Technology and Applications Symposium (IEEE RTAS) sponsored by IEEE TC on Real Time System and supported from the U.S. National Science Foundation. He is in the Computer Engineering laboratory, and won the honor by his research of technique of Delayed Locking Technique for Improving Real-Time Performance of Embedded Linux by Prediction of Timer Interrupt. His paper was selected to be the best because of its practicality. His research purposed the technique that can dramatically improve real time problem, which was indicated to be the big problem of Linux. Moreover, he presented the way to easily materialize this technique in the practical system. Best Paper Award is the prize awarded by IEEE Computer Society in the recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of real time system and embedded technology. IEEE RTAS is a symposium held annually by IEEE. In this year, the 11th symposium was held from March 7 to March 10, for four days, in San Francisco, United States. The purpose of this year symposium was to seek papers describing significant contributions both to state of the art and state of the practice in the broad field of embedded and open real-time computing, control, and communication. Therefore, it especially focused on online real-time and embedded applications ranging from industrial embedded applications such as aeronautics and automotive systems to open multimedia, telecommunication and mobile computing systems. Approximately 200 related erudite from almost 20 countries including United States, England, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden participated in this symposium. Korean Researchers Develop Skin-Like Tactile Sensor
THE KOREA TIMES2005.1.31(Mon) A South Korean scientific research center said Sunday that it has developed a tactile sensor capable of functioning like human skin. Scientists from KAIST developed the precision tactile sensor with 1-millimeter spatial resolution. The tactile sensor is made of polydimethylsiloxane, a synthetic rubber, and has a 1-millimeter spatial resolution capability, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) said. ``Many tactile sensors have been developed so far, but ours has the highest spatial resolution capability, flexibility, softness and extensibility,’’ said Lee Hyung-kyu, who led the development project. Late last year, the University of Tokyo unveiled a tactile sensor with a spatial resolution capability of 2 millimeters. Lee said his team will announce the results of their research at an international conference on micro-electro-mechanical systems, to be held early next month in the U.S. city of Miami. The new sensor is widely expected to lay the foundation for coating humanoids such as South Korea"s HUBO or Japan"s ASIMO with artificial skin. HUBO is a humanoid robot recently developed by KAIST. It is capable of moving its fingers independently, dancing and shaking hands with people by using its 41 joints. Japan"s ASIMO, an acronym for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, was unveiled in 2000 as the world"s most advanced bi-pedal robot. Through several upgrades, it is now able to spin in the air, bend or twist its torso and maneuver around obstacles in its path.
