Credit Recognition Exam

An undergraduate student may take the Credit Recognition Exam and receive credit for courses.

Application and Application Period

1 week before and after the beginning of every semester.

Examination Fee

20,000 KRW per subject (make payment after receiving the payment notice).

Courses Subject to Examination

  • Limited to courses that are open for the relevant semester.
  • Subjects difficult to impose credit recognition exam due to special characteristics of the course (research for graduation, individual research, seminar, special lecture, labs, and etc.) are excluded.
  • The Credit Recognition Exam may not be given if the course is not suitable in relation to the course progression of the student’s general studies even though the subject is not considered to have been taken by Article 80, paragraph 1, of the school regulations, and is considered to be a general subject.

Credit Conferment

The passing standard for the Credit Recognition Exam is at least a B-. Credit is conferred according to Article 49, paragraph 1, of the school regulations.

Application Procedure

  • 1Fill out application form

  • 3Receive confirmation from advising professor and department head/ major advising professor and submit to the office in charge (Academic Registrars Team)
  • 4Conduct examination and notify results
  • 5Notify the candidates who have passed the examination.

Credit Recognition of Completed Courses

Recognition of credit from other domestic and foreign universities (and graduate schools).Article 31 of the curriculum management guidelines

  • Credit acquired for certain courses from other universities (and graduate schools) will be recognized if the courses correlate with the required courses of the relevant department.
  • Extent of credit recognition: Up to 66 credits among undergraduate courses(courses in the 100~400’s) and mutually recognized courses in the graduate program (courses in the 500’s) for undergraduate students. Up to 12 credits for master students, and 18 credits for Ph.D. students among graduate courses(courses in the 500~800’s: applicable to students for students entering KAIST in 2015 and thereafter. for those who have entered KAIST in 2014 and before: mutually recognized courses in the undergraduate program (courses in the 400’s) also can be transferred if the students apply for credit transfer of courses taken in graduated program from other graduate schools(not undergraduate program))
  • Application Period: When enrolled in school (suggested that the application be submitted within one year of enrollment).
  • Procedure: Students must apply for Credit Recognition of Completed Courses online at the Academic System → receive approval from the course professor(after interview) and the head of department of the course → Students must submit it online(manual) at the Academic System to the advisor professor and submit the original transcript to Academic Registrar’s Team offline → receive approval from the advisor professor and the head of department.
  • Document Submission
    • Original copy of transcript from the other university (or graduate school).
    • Syllabus(attach)

Recognition of Credit from other Departments (majors)Article 32 of the Curriculum Management Guidelines

  • If the student has completed the course and earned credit, partial or full credit may be recognized for major courses that overlap with the curriculum of the new department (major) and electives that are closely related to the curriculum of the new department/major.
  • Application Period: After department transfer, but before the end of the relevant semester.
  • Procedure: Students must apply for credits completed before admission online at the Academic System → receive approval from the course professor(after interview) → Students must submit it online(manual) at the Academic System to the advisor professor → recommendation(receive approval) by the advising professor and confirmation(receive approval) from the department head → approval of credit recognition.

Recognition of credits earned from KAISTArticle 32 Section 2 of the curriculum management chart

  • If the student is readmitted due to being selected through the admission process, and if the student applies for credit recognition during enrolled period, partial or full credit may be recognized for credits earned at the relevant institution.
  • Procedure: Students must apply for credits completed before admission online at the Academic System → receive approval from the course professor(after interview) → Students must submit it online(manual) at the Academic System to the advisor professor → recommendation(receive approval) by the advising professor and confirmation(receive approval) from the department head → approveal of credit recognition.

Credit Recognition for Mutually Recognized CoursesArticle 34 of the curriculum management guidelines

  • If an undergraduate student completes a mutually recognized course in the graduate program (courses in the 500’s) the credit may be recognized for either the undergraduate or graduate curriculum. With the exception being if the student needs this credit to satisfy minimal graduation requirements, the credit will not be mutually recognized.
  • The undergraduate student must request credit recognition until the end date of the final enrolled semester for master course for the credits earned (only for mutually recognized courses in the graduate program) during their undergraduate career.
  • Application Period: Until the end date of the final enrolled semester for master course
    MS and PhD Integrated course(Master) students : Within the second enrolled semester(before entering PhD course)
  • Procedure: Students must apply for credits completed before admission online at the Academic System → receive approval from the course professor(after interview) → Students must submit it online(manual) at the Academic System to the department/program office of undergraduate → confirmation from the Department/Major Staff of undergraduate program and recommendation(receive approval) by the advising professor and confirmation(receive approval) from the department head → approval of credit recognition.
